These heavy and chunky benches are made out of a single length of oak sleeper. The weight and size of the substantial timber adds to the solid feel of these benches that really are built to last. Its the rustic feel and ruggedness that makes these so appealing visually and in use.
Each section of solid oak sleeper is planed on three sides (the top and both edges) to give a smooth feel. Each end is then cut off to to make the legs, the top is then rebated and the legs are housed into it which give the bench it strength and rigidity. Once the legs are in place holes are bored and large oak dowels are driven through the top and into the leg section. Each dowel has an Iroko wedge in the bottom so when the dowel it is driven into place the end expands and lock the leg in place. Then a final wedge is knocked into the top of the dowel to finish off the joint and give you the lovely finishing detail on the seat of the bench. As the bench ages and dries it grabs hold of the dowel making the joint even stronger.
If chosen the bench is then oiled on the top, front and back to highlight the grain but the underneath is left to age and grey as naturally occurs with oak. This contrast of the polished and natural really highlights the rustic feel to the bench.
