The art of Japanese joinery - Solid Iroko kingsize bed
The only real brief for this bed was that it should come apart relatively easily and that it be made of Iroko. After a bit of discussion we decided to go for a Japanese joinery inspired feel and highlight the joinery over everything else. All of the joints of this bed are hand cut and simply slide into place, then are either wedged or pegged to secure them. In the case of the corner joints it simply the weight of the mattress that hold the bed together.
The matching bedside cabinets are made so the unique grain of the timber runs straight up one side over the top and down the other side to encompass each piece. The drawers were then constructed using two different styles of hand cut dovetails. Once ready the cabinets were completed with handles inspired by the bed joinery to finish it all off beautifully.
